Newcastle Airport Excited About Fate Of Brand New Terminal Extension

The Rt, Hon Theresa Villiers MP, Minister for State Transport, officially opened the new terminal extension which is set to improve customer interaction.

(PRWEB) August 06, 2012Planning and development on the extension started back in October 2011 and was completed in time for the unveiling last week.

£3.2 Million pound was invested into the project which was decided was a necessary addition to the north east airport.

The main reasoning behind building the new, three storey section of, terminal was to add an extra security contingent to the airport in an attempt to process customers quicker and ensure that they are not left hanging around unnecessarily for extended periods of time.

The amount of security lanes at Newcastle Airport’s main terminal is now 10, in which luggage is scanned and processed before access to the departure lounge is granted. This is double the amount there had previously been. Only time will tell if this means that customers will be processed twice as quickly. There is also an additional 5,242 square feet of security search accommodation, which means more people can be cleared through customs, at the same time, than ever before.

Faster security processing can only mean faster boarding times and increased passenger numbers and this is likely to directly affect Newcastle Airport Parking.

Newcastleairportparking.com provides passengers flying out of the best airport of its size in Europe with the cheapest parking options in and around the airport’s immediate vicinity. A number of parking options are available and all guarantee the best value and the best customer service, which is also something you will find in the new and original terminals.

An economic impact study carried out by York Aviation in May found that the airport supports over 7,500 jobs in the north east region and many more have been created with both the building and subsequent opening of the new terminal extension.

Work on the extension was carried out by a number of contractors. The main design and build was undertaken by BAM Construction Limited, while the architectural expertise came from local business Space Architecture, mechanical and electrical design was overseen by Desco, Waterman Structures was brought in to ensure the structure of the extension was sound and Hall and Partners were the construction design management team.

In order to ensure that as little disruption as possible was made to customers, travelling between October last year and now, the building work was done in a number of stages and finally completed mid-way through June.

The management at Airport parking shop and Manchester airport parking centre are said to be excited about how the terminal extension proves itself over the busy summer season.

Throughout the development the site’s immigration arrivals area was also redesigned, in partnership with the UK Border Agency, to speed up that aspect of security as well. There are now six presentation desks at immigration as opposed to the four that were in use prior to the upgrade.

All the latest technology is in use in the now extended terminal and stores are already noticing a small rise in sales, with people being processed through security quicker, they have more time to avail themselves of duty-free.

More than 100 flights canceled at Newark airport after security breach

NEWARK — Terminal C had to be locked down this morning, when more than 100 flights were canceled and dozens delayed, after officials realized a passenger had made it through a security checkpoint without being properly screened, officials said.

Service continued at Terminals A and B, but the lockdown at Terminal C, which resumed normal operations at noon, delayed flights and caused all passengers departing from that terminal to be visually checked again, said Al Della Fave, a spokesman for the Port Authority Police.

A separate, earlier incident at Terminal C caused officials to suspend screening of oversize baggage for just under an hour, before an Essex County bomb squad cleared the bag.

The three-hour lockdown, which began at 8:45 a.m., caused a massive backup at security checkpoints in the terminal. Hundreds of passengers waited in long lines that snaked from check points all the way back to stairways and escalators.

After a search, it was determined that the passenger departed Newark Liberty Airport on a United Airlines flight to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, the Transportation Security Administration said in a statement. That flight landed in Cleveland without incident.

Normal screening operations resumed at Noon. But by then, the incident caused
more than 65 departing flights to be delayed, and more than 100 flights to be canceled, said Christen David, a United spokeswoman. David said the airline would work with passengers to book them onto new flights as soon as possible.

Della Fave said it was unclear just how the woman was improperly screened or how supervisors for the TSA at the terminal learned of the improper screening. Police determined the breach required the lockdown.

Planes that had left their gates after the improper screening had to be called back from the tarmac so that passengers on board could be checked again in an attempt to locate the woman, Della Fave said. He did not know how many passengers or flights were affected.

In the earlier incident, which occurred at about 6:30 a.m., a large checked bag was sent on to be loaded on board an aircraft before being properly screened, said a statement released by TSA spokeswoman Ann Davis. Officials closed the oversized baggage screening until the bag was found at 7:19 a.m., and the oversized baggage area was reopened. The bomb quad cleared the bag at 9:25am.

Terminal C is operated by United Airlines, which accounts for three quarters of all flights in and out of Newark Liberty International Airport.

Flights resume at Auckland Airport

Flights have resumed at Auckland Airport after some domestic flights were cancelled amid foggy conditions this morning.

An airport spokesperson said Air New Zealand had cancelled two incoming and five outgoing domestic flights earlier today because of low visibility.

Flights resumed shortly before 9am.

Fog has disrupted flights at the airport more than four times in the last month.

Thousands of air travellers were stranded across the country in the middle of the July school holidays when heavy fog caused widespread delays.

MetService is forecasting the misty conditions will clear by later this afternoon
